The Ivy Room

Sophistication, jazz, and rooftop charm.

The NOMAD Magazine team recently dropped by the Ivy Room restaurant and live music lounge at the Royalton — a multi-faceted indoor outdoor rooftop experience — and we are already planning to return. The beautifully appointed space, with its warm lighting, small plate and shareable menu items, and creative cocktail list, is an ideal setting for a romantic date, elevated business meeting, or chic night out with friends.

As we stepped off the elevator, we were welcomed by a hostess and ushered to a table near the stunning signature bright yellow piano — this is, after all, the spot to sample a rotating lineup of NYC-based pianists. The star of the evening? Jazz pianist Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman, who played a soulful, sophisticated set that managed to be both captivating and subtle. His orchestrations enhanced the atmosphere without overpowering it and the sound was perfectly balanced: loud enough to be felt, but quiet enough to keep the conversation flowing.

Our Wednesday night outing offered even more to love, thanks to the venue’s “Wine and Dine” special; half off select bottles and complimentary wine tastings with entrées. A thoughtful and expansive wine list offers something for everyone, while the equally impressive cocktail list features inventive craft drinks and modern classics, like the Caviar Dirty Martini and the Toasted Almond Smoked Old Fashioned.

Small and shared plates shine, with standouts like Charred Gambas, Citrus-Cured Salmon, Dirty Shrimp Cocktail, and Lamb Chops, all beautifully plated and generously portioned for sharing. Entrée options include a selection of pasta, fish, and fowl.

Open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 pm ‘til late, The Ivy Room is more than just a piano bar — it’s an experience. Whether settling in for a late-night drink by the fire, enjoying live jazz under the stars (for a breath of fresh air, the rooftop’s outdoor balconies are fixed with plush seating and city views, a prime spot for sunset cocktails), or indulging in a leisurely dinner with friends, this is one of NoMad’s best-kept secrets. Pro Tip: Grab a seat near the piano, order a glass of wine, and let the hustle and bustle of the city melt away.
