The dog days of summer

As told to Teddi Fastenberg

When a perfectly satisfied suburban dog reluctantly takes the train into Manhattan to “explore” NoMad, she might end up surprised by how much fun there is to be had. At least that’s what happened to me. I’m Winnie. And I’m a bitch. No really. I am also a rescue, a real mutt, and a member of the wonderful family who saved me.

Recently, I hopped on a train from Westchester and brought my human mom back to the place where our relationship began: New York City. Yep, that’s right, I used to live a beautiful life on the Upper East Side before my mom’s human babies were born. Now we live in suburbia. Don’t get me wrong. I love the quiet of country life, but I was surprised to find that being back on the hustling bustling streets of NY really got my tail wagging.

After a quick cab ride downtown, we arrived at Le Pecora Bianca in the NoMad Piazza for brunch. Dining al fresco is lovely and resting under an umbrella even better. I even got my own dish of water and a few behind-the-ear scratches from some friendly patrons — my favorite!

Once our bellies were full we decided to check out the new dog run in Madison Square Park. It seems the humans spared no expense; Jemmy’s Dog Run in Madison Square Park is first rate. I even met a few other pups I was happy to tolerate. The exercise was great, but I tired out quickly so we took a leisurely walk over to Pet Smart on Broadway to shop for some treats and a new chew toy.

I guess my human was feeling the good neighborhood vibes because the next thing I knew, we were walking straight into the New York Dog Spa & Hotel on West 25th Street. Now, I’m not always in favor of a bath, but this bath? Oh, this bath was the bath to end all baths. I strutted out of there fresh as a daisy and looking like a million bucks. The only thing that could make my day in NoMad any better was a Puppacino from the Starbucks around the corner on 26th Street.

Do you know that I was actually sorry to head back to the train station? I mean, the suburbs may be my home, but it sure was nice to have a day that was all about me. NoMad really knows how to treat a dog right. From outdoor activities and plenty of pampering to shopping and eating, there really is no place like NoMad. Woof.
