Taste Of Asia brings the love language of food to Madison Square Park (10/08/24)
Taste of Asia in Madison Square Park was a celebration of AAPI communities and their contribution to the flavor of New York City. Tickets to the stellar event benefited both Madison Square Park Conservancy and the non-profit Apex for Youth organization which empowers underserved Asians and immigrants from low-income NYC families. The sold-out evening — featuring signature items from 40 local restaurants — enabled guests to mix and mingle over food, cocktails and community while raising nearly $1.4 million.
Taste of Asia is a premier food event in a city that thrives on its unique blending of culinary culture. “This is a celebration of diversity and unity through food,” said co-chair Simon Kim, founder and CEO of Gracious Hospitality Management, via the @celebratetasteofasia
Instagram feed. “And what better way to do that than to gather 40 of the best restaurants, amazing drinks, and an amazing DJ, in our very own Madison Square Park.” Kim, along with co-chairs Wen Zhou, Michael Chung, and Phillip Lim offered the 1,000 guests in attendance a magical evening of unity and culinary delights — from Win Son’s delicious bao buns to Bangkok Supper Club’s short rib curry.
Founded in the wake of rising hate crimes against the AAPI community, Taste of Asia strives to elevate and acknowledge the diversity and inclusivity of New York through the love language of food. The event (in its third year) offered guests the chance to sample menu items from a curated selection of restaurants that are often booked solid on any given night while also supporting two worthy causes. “Madison Square Park is proud to be both the home and a beneficiary of Taste of Asia,” said Holly Leicht, executive director of Madison Square Park Conservancy. “Welcoming 60,000 visitors every day, our park embodies the cultural diversity that Taste of Asia celebrates. We are grateful to our trustee Simon Kim and the other co-chairs for recognizing the importance of supporting New York’s public parks to ensure they remain welcoming spaces for all.”

Reading and conversation with 2024 Harman Writer in Residence Eyal Press (10/24/24)
On a Thursday evening, a lively room of students, professors, and colleagues came together at Baruch College to hear renowned investigative journalist Eyal Press read some of his work, discuss his writing process, and answer questions.
Author of three books, “Absolute Convictions,” “Beautiful Souls,” and “Dirty Work: Essential Jobs and the Hidden Toll of Inequality in America,” Press shared unique insights with the audience. “Every writer is working to answer the same question,” he said. “How do individuals navigate morally difficult situations?”
The morality theme plays a role in nearly all of Press’s work, including his first book which is centered on the Buffalo, NY abortion clinic where his father was an OB-GYN, and his second that explores — among other stories — hidden abuse in the US prison system. His third book examines the mistreatment of workers and the broken US food system. The evening’s Q&A covered topics like “how to speak up when in morally gray situations” and “how journalists can make a change in the world.”
The 25-year-old Harman Program also announced the first Harman student to return to Baruch as the Harman Writer for the semester. Daphne Palasi Andreades graduated from Baruch in 2015 before publishing the critically acclaimed book, “Brown Girls.”
