NoMad wants MoSex

233 5th Ave

The Museum of Sex in NoMad, also known as MoSex, is a museum unlike any other. With a mission tied to preserving and presenting the history, evolution, and cultural significance of human sexuality this unique archive on Fifth Avenue near 27th Street is well-worth a visit.

Founded by Daniel Gluck, the professionally- curated museum opened in 2002 with the goal of promoting understanding and dialogue about all aspects of human sexuality. Home to over 20,000 artifacts, MoSex covers a wide range of topics from historical, cultural, scientific, and artistic perspectives.

Thought-provoking and immersive, exhibits tap into all forms of media — artwork, artifacts, interactive displays, and multimedia presentations — and encourage visitors to engage with the subject matter and challenge societal norms and taboos. Portia Munson: The Pink Bedroom, for example, is centered on the many, and often conflicting, expectations we put on the production and consumption of the female body, while Artifact (xxx): Selections from Secret Collections presents an intimate exploration of how sex manifests across culture through art, science, and design. The on-going Superfunland: Journey Into the Erotic Carnival examines the sexual history of fairs and festivals, allowing visitors to lose themselves in the decadence and joy of a reimagined carnival.

MoSex is deeply committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity through topics such as gender identity, LGBTQ+ rights, and sexual health. Because many of its collections document the evolution of sexual attitudes and practices — not only in New York City but also on a global scale — it is hard to deny its cultural significance.

Know before you go: You will need about 1-2 hours to tour the museum. All visitors must be 18 or older and present a valid ID. Hours are Sun-Thurs: 10am-9pm; Fri-Sat: 11am-11pm. Adults: $18.50 + tax; seniors/students: $16.50 + tax. MoSex in NoMad is also home to an award-winning museum shop and the Carnal Carnival Bar.
