Rizzoli Bookstore: Celebrating its 60th Anniversary

Rizzoli Bookstore is truly a world-class literary destination, offering a unique blend of cultural sophistication, history, and elegance that sets it apart from other bookstores around the globe. From its meticulously curated selection of books to its iconic architectural design, Rizzoli stands as a beacon of literary and artistic excellence, drawing readers, collectors, and creatives alike.

“Rizzoli has a long-standing tradition in illustrated books,” said store manager Livia Senic-Matuglia. “Over 60 years of passionate work, we’ve developed a unique expertise that led to the creation of our own publishing house 50 years ago. With both bookselling and publishing under one roof, Rizzoli has a keen eye for selecting the best in art, design, and fashion, all while staying in tune with market trends.” Readers come to Rizzoli not just to browse but to discover artistic treasures, making it a haven for lovers of the visual and literary arts.

Founded in 1964 by Angelo Rizzoli, the bookstore’s deep roots in the world of literature and art give it an unmatched credibility and prestige. When once asked why he chose to open an international bookstore in New York, Rizzoli explained: “I was visiting New York, walking on Fifth Avenue with the Italian Consul-General, who lamented that there wasn’t a single bookstore in the country where one could find the beautiful books published in Italy. At that moment, we passed 712 Fifth Avenue, and I decided then to create a bookstore that would be the most beautiful in the largest city of the most important country in the world.” (Excerpt from Lillian Ross’s New Yorker article, “Molto, Molto, Molto,” April 23, 1965)

“Rizzoli used to be in the early days, the place where one went to meet Italian intellectuals, the most important journalists, find Italian books, newspapers, and music, Senic-Matuglia explained. “In respect of this tradition, we keep this strong connection collaborating with all the Italian institutions in the city, curating a vibrant selection of the hottest Italian books.”

Rizzoli is as much an aesthetic experience as it is a literary one. In 2015, the store moved to its current location in the heart of New York’s NoMad district, the bookstore’s design combines the grandeur of high ceilings, classic chandeliers, and dark wood paneling with a contemporary flair, offering an inviting space that inspires exploration. “With the NoMad location, we wanted to blend the charm of Italian architecture with the energy of NYC while preserving the structure of this remarkable building, Senic-Matuglia said. “We incorporated original furniture and chandeliers from our legendary 57th Street location. The connection to Italian beauty is further enhanced by the stunning Fornasetti wallpaper.” This luxurious environment, filled with carefully displayed books, adds to the sense of discovery that defines the Rizzoli experience.

In addition to its impressive book selection, Rizzoli serves as a cultural epicenter, regularly hosting world-class events, including author signings, literary discussions, and art exhibitions. “Events are our lifeblood — they bring everything to life. Books transform into live experiences shared with authors and the public. Our program is designed to showcase the most important books of the year, along with their creators.” These events draw both emerging and established voices in the world of literature and the arts, solidifying Rizzoli’s place as an intellectual and cultural hub.

Although Rizzoli has an international influence, it retains a local charm that resonates deeply with New Yorkers. “Rizzoli manages to balance global reach and local charm by staying connected to the heart of New York and its people. The city is a blend of cultures, and our customers reflect that mix — some are international visitors, others are true New Yorkers,” Senic-Matuglia explained. The bookstore invites visitors to linger, explore, and engage with the world of books in an intimate and personal way, creating a space that feels both personal and inviting.

In an era dominated by digital media, Rizzoli continues to attract readers who crave a more tactile and curated experience. Senic-Matuglia captured this sentiment beautifully: “There’s something irreplaceable about walking into a bookstore, being surrounded by carefully curated shelves, and discovering books in a way that feels thoughtful and intimate. It’s not just about the books themselves — it’s about the connection with people who share the same passion for reading. For many, the experience of holding a book, feeling the pages, and appreciating its design remains an essential part of the joy of reading. The physical space becomes a haven for readers to explore, reflect, and connect in a way that’s deeply personal.”

Rizzoli Bookstore’s legacy of blending literature with the visual arts and cinema is as vibrant today as ever. From producing iconic Italian films to being a beloved cultural landmark in New York, Rizzoli continues to inspire creative minds across disciplines. As the bookstore celebrates its 60th anniversary, its rich history is honored through a diverse program of events that highlight the interplay of word and image. Whether through conversations with renowned authors, musical tributes to cinematic soundtracks, or the annual Holiday Fair, Rizzoli remains a dynamic space for cultural cross-pollination, continuing to shape and influence the artistic world.
